Welcome to Stanborough Gravel Pits
Stanborough Gravel Pits (GPs) have been my 'go-to' local patch of the last 3 or 4 years with regular (sometimes almost daily) visits reaping dividends and adding hugely to the variety of birds I can see within 5 miles of home.
Situated just northeast of St Albans in Hertfordshire, Stanborough Gravel Pits have been quarried for sand and gravel for nearly 20 years. The resultant changes to the landscape have meant a range of habitats being created many of which have proved excellent for wildlife and, in particular, birds. Quarrying ceased at the site in 2023 and work to restore the land to farmland has commenced. It remains to be seen how much of this wildlife-rich site will remain but I am hopeful the site will continue to attract a variety of species.
